Sodium hydroxide (a weak solution) - safe to gargle with?

 

I cannot tell you what is safe for you, personally. Just because I've done something that worked for me or others I know, does NOT mean it will work for you, nor does it guarantee it will be safe for you. I work for a company that makes a medically certified water ionizer that creates a weak sodium hydroxide solution that the company specifically states, is not for drinking.  I do know people who've drank it (the worst side effect I heard of seemed to be heartburn), but that doesn't mean it's a good idea for you or anyone else to do it.  So as a distributor for the company, I have to make it clear that the company clearly advises people in their machine manual: The 11.5 pH water is not for drinking.

This is one of those situations that if were on Snopes, it would be listed as "partially true".

Zerorez uses a process to "create" the cleaning solution using plain tap water, a semi-permeable membrane, Sodium Chloride and direct current electricity. The process creates two solutions, one at each electrode on one side of the membrane. One of these solutions is water with a weak concentration of Sodium Hydroxide. The parent company of Zerorez, called EAU Technologies holds a patent on the process when used specifically to make the two solutions. That's the important part....the patent applies to the process only when used to make the two solutions.

The weak Sodium Hydroxide & water solution makes for a "mediocre" rinse. The actual cleaning is very reliant on conventional presprays, aggitation, and heat. The solution actually contains so little Sodium Hydroxide, that it is still safe to drink and is easily neutralized by an alkaline prespray. Hence, while still potentially being over 10 pH, the whole process can still garner a good SOA rating.

 Further tests were made to demonstrate the practicability of renewing or regenerating bone which had been used to remove fluorine from water so as to renew its absorptive capacity for fluorine and thus render the material capable of indefinite re-use. It was demonstrated that the absorbed fluorine could be practically completely removed from the used bone by treating the bone with a dilute solution of sodium hydroxide, either with or without boiling, and then Washing Out the excess hydroxide with water and neutraliz ing the last traces with an acid, such as hydro chloric, as in the initial processing. In this re generation treatment, boiling in the caustic solu tion is not necessary if the time of contact is suff ciently long, Best activation of the bone is ob tained by letting the bone stand over night in 0.2 to 0.5 normal sodium hydroxide. Agitation of the suspension would Speed up the process and can be used if desired. The hydroxide is then washed out and the last traces neutralized with 0.1 nor mal acid for ten to fifteen minutes. Bone which had been twice renewed in this fashion was found to be equally as effective as the Original material,

The Cleansing Water is also produced at the same time the Sanitizing Water is being made. The 11.5 pH water is excellent for cleaning and degreasing. The Cleansing Water uses the sodium of the saline solution to create a weak sodium hydroxide solution. Sodium hydroxide is a critical ingredient in soaps. Without this ingredient, the water would not be able to break down and emulsify oils when cleaning. The electrical charge also restructures the water so that it becomes a non-polar solvent, which also allows it to mix with and break down oils. These waters are unique and special. Between the two of them, they can be used for safe, non-toxic cleaning and degreasing around the entire house. These waters are effective enough that they can replace the traditional chemical based cleaners, which will save money and reduce the risk of chemical exposure or contamination.

Do not use this product

• for more than 7 days unless directed by a dentist or doctor
• if you are allergic to povidone-iodine or any other ingredients in this product
• if you have any thyroid conditions

When using this product

• do not get into eyes. If contact occurs, rinse eyes thoroughly with water. If irritation persists, consult a doctor
• do not swallow
• do not use with hydrogen peroxide

Stop use and ask a doctor if

• symptoms do not improve in 7 days
• irritation, pain, or redness persists or worsens
• swelling, rash, or fever develops

If pregnant or breast-feeding, ask a health professional before use.

Keep out of reach of children. In case more than used for gargling is accidentally swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.
